Lexington's Nick Ciuffo Gets $2 Million Bonus With Rays

The former Lexington High catcher was the No. 21 pick in the MLB draft earlier this month.

Nick Ciuffo, Lexington High's former standout catcher, accepted a $2 million bonus when he signed with the Tampa Bay Rays Friday, according to reports.

The Rays offered him the full $1,974,700 value recommended by the MLB, according to the Tampa Bay Times. He reported to Port Charlotte, Fla. to play for the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League Rays who started their season Friday.

Ciuffo, the No. 21 pick in the first round of the MLB draft earlier this month, has been committed to the University of South Carolina since he was 14 and signed with the Gamecocks in December but instead decided to go pro.

As a senior at Lexington High, he led the Wildcats to the 4A state baseball championship and was also named South Carolina 4A Player of the Year
