Lexington One Hires Irmo Legend Phil Savitz As River Bluff Coach

The coach brings more than 600 career wins and 13 state titles with him to Lexington District 1.

The new River Bluff High School set to open in Lexington District One in the fall has added another golden feather to its cap. The district school board on Tuesday approved hiring Irmo coaching legend Phil Savitz as its new boys' soccer coach. Savitz, who will coach Irmo for the final time this spring, led the Yellow Jackets to 617 wins and 13 state championships in more than three decades at the school. He is a member of the state athletic hall of fame. Board members approved the move after executive session and did not name the coach, position they were hiring for or even the school, according to district spokeswoman Mary Beth Hill. Meadow Glen MS wins LEGO Competition

The Robo-Gators recently won the Lexington Regional.

The Meadow Glen Middle Robotics Team, known as the Robo-Gators, recently won the Best Robot Design trophy at the FIRST LEGO League’s Lexington Regional Competition. The Robo-Gators competed at the regional qualifier, held at Carolina Springs Middle Schoool, alongside 20 other local teams. The team met after school twice a week and, with the help of two mentors from Intel, created their robot designed with a claw and the ability to use line followers, motor turns and timers, according to a release from Lexington School District 1. Updated: Radar Posted to Help You Track Storms

Update 4:30 p.m.: As storms begin to move across the state, here is a Columbia-area radar for you to track the storms. Update 3:24 p.m.: Richland 1 has canceled afterschool programs for middle and high schools. Those programs include the 21st Century, afterschool athletic tutorial and comprehensive remediation programs, and all athletics events/practices/games including the middle school basketball tournament. The tournament will be rescheduled.  Elementary afterschool programs will proceed as scheduled. In Special Meeting, Lexington Board Dismisses Teacher

Board acts before July 1 contract renewals

One Lexington teacher may not have a very happy Fourth of July. During a special called board meeting this morning, the Lexington County School District 1 Board of Trustees voted for the immediate dismissal of an annual contract teacher, pursuant to South Carolina Code of Laws Section 59-26-40.  The identity of the teacher remained confidential because of district policy, and no information other than the copy of the motion could be released at this time, said Mary Beth Hill, Chief Communications Officer for District 1.
