Red Palmetto: SCGOP Looking for Romney's 'Fire,' 'Conviction'

Former Massachusetts governor will accept nomination on Thursday night.

For the second time in a row, the Republican National Convention is disrupted by a hurricane.  Hurricane Isaac has caused most of Monday's opening day schedule to be canceled (the revised schedule is posted below). In 2008, Minneapolis-St. Paul was struck by Hurricane Gustav, which led to a shortened schedule. But the wet weather has done little to dampen South Carolina Republicans’ enthusiasm for the event. More than 80 percent of the 41 Red Palmetto survey of GOP insiders said late last week they plan on following the convention regularly or 24/7. The enthusiasm for presumptive nominee Mitt Romney is another matter, however. While Romney is expected to carry the Palmetto State with ease, there is an excitement gap. That gap is in …

@Sarah Jacobs: hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, terrorist bombings and "possibly a meteor"...to punish sinners...lots of lessons/questions here... is God punishing the GOPs or the city...is He/She punishing either for their position on homosexuality...for embracing homosexuality or being homophobes...for denying women choice or advocating choice... perhaps punishment for hypocrisy...ie, …   more ›

Survey: Romney Should Pick Rubio as VP

Our Red Palmetto survey of influential South Carolina conservatives finds Florida Sen. Marco Rubio the best option.

As GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney prepares to pick his runningmate in a matter of weeks — if not days — South Carolina Republicans say Florida Sen. Marco Rubio is the right choice. In another in a series of our Red Palmetto surveys, where Patch asks nearly 100 influential conservatives in South Carolina their opinion of political matters, 56 responded in a short survey week. Of those who responded, 28.6 percent said Romney should pick Rubio. And 31.5 percent predict Romney will indeed pick Rubio. "Romney needs to generate some excitement with his choice," said one respondent. Running a close second is former Secretary of State Condeleeza Rice. Twenty-five percent said Romney should pick Rice, while 18.5 percent believe he will. The …

I would assume that Mitt Romney will pick the individual he feels most comfortable with. The president and VP shouldn't be a popularity contest, like the last election.   more ›

Poll: Gov. Christie Could Have Been Contender

This week's Huffington Post/ Patch poll found Gov. Chris Christie could have contended for GOP nomination.

Gov. Chris Christie's campaign for the the Republican presidential nomination never got started, as the often-blunt New Jersey politician announced Tuesday he would not seek the office in 2012. But in this week's Huffington Post/ Patch poll, conservative influentials in South Carolina, Iowa and New Hampshire said Christie ranked just as well as Gov. Rick Perry and former Gov. Mitt Romney. Eighty percent of the 156 Republicans who responded said Christie would make a good president, and 76 percent said he could beat President Obama in the general election. Those numbers are similiar to those garnered by Perry and Romney. And 56 percent of those polled, when asked for one word to describe Christie, responded with a positive word and only 16 …

At this point Fred Flintston would look good to the GOP circus arena. This entire GOP attack on the American people is tyranny at best. The only people that will vote for a Republican are the dellusional crowds that would vote for them no matter how much hardship they instill on thier families. I use to think that the Republican Party was a good healthy balance to the government. Those days are …   more ›
