Brett Parker Takes Stand in Murder Trial

Brett Parker, an Irmo man on trial for the death of his wife and friend, took the stand Friday in his own defense.

Brett Parker took the stand in his own defense Friday, answering questions for close to three hours, according to reports.  Parker said although his marriage to Tammy Parker was struggling, they loved each other, according to a report from WIS. He admitted he had an affiar, but said he and Tammy stayed together because of their kids.  Tammy Parker was found dead in the Parkers' Ascot Estates home in April 2012. Brett Parker's defense attorneys say his gambling partner, Bryan Capnerhurst, shot Tammy Parker, and Brett Parker then acted in self-defense and shot Capnerhurst. Lexington Police Investigate Car Break-Ins, Credit Card Fraud

Police say the woman in the surveillance photos tried to use a stolen credit card at a bank.

Lexington police are trying to identify the woman in the surveillance photos in connection with two car break-ins. Between 7 and 7:40 p.m. Wednesday, someone broke the window of two cars parked at a business in Lexington and took a purse from each car, according to the Lexington Police Department. The woman in the surveillance pictures tried to use one of the stolen credit cards around 11:40 a.m. Friday at a bank in West Columbia, according to the police department. She has the letters "BES" or possibly "BEST" tattooed on her left wrist.  Lexington Police Chief Terrence Green urges and reminds everyone to not just lock the doors to their vehicles, but to remove valuables completely. Report: Jury Finds Man Guilty in Hit-and-Run Death of USC Professor

Toby Morriss, an adjunct professor of photography at USC, died in the wreck on Knox Abott Drive.

A 48-year-old man was sentenced to 20 years in prison Wednesday after a Lexington County jury found him guilty in the 2010 fatal hit-and-run death of a University of South Carolina professor, according to a report from The State.  William Craig Caughman was driving the pickup truck that, in February 2010, hit Toby Morriss, an adjunct professor of photography at USC who was driving his motorcycle on Knox Abbott Drive, according to The State. Morriss was taken to the hospital where he died seven days later from complications from the wreck. Caughman left the scene of the wreck, according to The State, and later cut the doors off his pickup truck and tried to hide the truck under a tarp in his backyard.  Read more from The State.

Detectives Investigate Burglaries of 5 Lexington County Churches

The burglaries all happened at churches in rural areas near Pelion and Swansea.

Detectives are looking for burglars who broke into five churches near Pelion and Swansea and stole cash. The most recent burglary happened this week, according to the Lexington County Sheriff's Department. The first one happened in February.  Calvary United Methodist Church at 1130 Calvary Church Road was broken into sometime between Monday and Tuesday. The burglars also hit Ebenezer United Methodist Church at 2805 Highway 178 in Swansea sometime between Sunday and Monday. Dolorosa Worship Center at 365 Old Charleston Road in Pelion was broken into three times: sometime between Feb. 13 and 14, again on March 4 and a third time between May 2 and 3. Gibson Road to Close Saturday Morning for 5K Run

The Lexington County Sheriff's Foundation is holding the 7th annual Jailbreak 5K Run.

Drivers can expect delays on roads near the James R. Metts Law Enforcement Complex early Saturday morning during the Lexington County Sheriff's Foundation Jailbreak 5K Run. The part of Gibson Road near the law enforcement complex will be completely closed to traffic between 6:30 and 10 a.m. Officers will be directing traffic on roads in the area. Anyone with questions concerning traffic delays and road closures during the run can contact the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at 803-785-8230. The following people have outstanding arrest warrants with the Lexington County Sheriff's Department.

Jon Ryan Hewitt, 20, is wanted on an arrest warrant on a charge of criminal domestic violence. His last known address was 3001 Princeton Road, West Columbia. Hewitt is 5-foot-8 and weighs 160 pounds. Hewitt has brown hair and brown eyes. Steven Craig Harmon, 29, is wanted on an arrest warrant on a charge of burglary. His last known address was 347 Green Hill Drive, Gilbert. Harmon is 6-foot-2 and weighs 170 pounds. Harmon has brown hair and brown eyes. Jeremy Scott Williamson, 23, is wanted on arrest warrants on charges of criminal domestic violence and burglary. Woman Charged With Trying to Defraud Bank of More Than $133,000

A Georgia woman was arrested after she tried to make a fraudulent wire transfer at a bank near Irmo.

Lexington County deputies arrested a Georgia woman this week who is suspected of fraudulently obtaining $1.5 million dollars from banks in nine states. Deputies say Vivienne Kaye Bloch, 52, of Decatur, Ga. is part of a criminal ring that has submitted forged documents at banks across the country to make transfers from bank accounts of businesses to unauthorized accounts.  Bloch entered the Bank of America branch at 4300 St. Andrews Road around 10 a.m. Monday, according to the sheriff's department. She presented a forged document for a wire transfer in the amount of $133,642.28, along with a counterfeit California driver’s license that falsely identified her as another woman. Brett Parker's defense attorneys started making their case Thursday in day 11 of the trial.  The defense brought several witnesses to the stand to show that Brett Parker did not know the value of his wife's life insurance policy prior to her death, according to a report from The State. A salesman with MetLife said he met with Brett Parker after his wife, Tammy Parker, was killed in April 2012 at their Irmo home.  The insurance salesman said that until Tammy Parker's death, he had not spoken to Brett Parker about insurance since 2008, according to The State.
