Speak Out: Will You Avoid Corley Mill Road When River Bluff High Opens?

Officials say road improvements won't be ready when the school opens in August.

When the new River Bluff High opens in the fall, drivers can expect to sit in traffic jams on Corley Mill Road, especially near U.S. 378 and I-20, according to reports.

The road improvements planned to mitigate traffic in the area won't be ready by August, Lexington County officials told The State. Officials expect the traffic congestion to last almost the whole 2013-2014 school year.

Corley Mill Road is already a busy road, said Lexington One spokeswoman Mary Beth Hill.

"We believe opening River Bluff High will contribute some more," Hill said. "But, right now, those jams and waits are already there as folks from Irmo take a shortcut to Columbia by coming over the dam, down Corley Mill Road and left on 378."

To help ease the traffic, classes for some students may start as early as 7:30 a.m., while classes for others may start as late as 9:30 a.m., Hill told The State

State, county, town, and Lexington One officials are working together to make the $3.5 million road improvements, according to the report. That includes widening U.S. 378 to three lanes.
