Lexington Elementary Students Read Tales to Man’s Best Friend

A therapy dog visits the school to motivate students to practice their reading.

Every Monday, students at Lexington Elementary receive a visit from Scrappy, a happy and enthusiastic therapy dog.

Throughout the week, students work hard to be prepared to read aloud to Scrappy during his visit. Students practice reading aloud and will often say, “Could we please practice that story again so we will sound good for Scrappy?”

During his visit, students get into their Scrappy groups and take turns reading aloud to the friendly canine. The students enjoy his visits saying, “I think he is really listening to our story! He looks like he liked that one!” The cuddly canine listener relaxes students and helps them encourage other students to read aloud.
