Survey: Romney Should Pick Rubio as VP

Our Red Palmetto survey of influential South Carolina conservatives finds Florida Sen. Marco Rubio the best option.

As GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney prepares to pick his runningmate in a matter of weeks — if not days — South Carolina Republicans say Florida Sen. Marco Rubio is the right choice.

In another in a series of our Red Palmetto surveys, where Patch asks nearly 100 influential conservatives in South Carolina their opinion of political matters, 56 responded in a short survey week.

Of those who responded, 28.6 percent said Romney should pick Rubio. And 31.5 percent predict Romney will indeed pick Rubio.

"Romney needs to generate some excitement with his choice," said one respondent.

Running a close second is former Secretary of State Condeleeza Rice. Twenty-five percent said Romney should pick Rice, while 18.5 percent believe he will.

The other choices South Carolina conservatives believe Romney should consider were: Rep. Paul Ryan (10.7 percent), Gov. Tim Pawlenty (5.4 percent), and Sens. Rob Portman and Rand Paul, Gov. Bobby Jindal, Gov. Chris Christie and Florida Rep. Allen West (each with 3.6 percent).

One thing is for certain: South Carolina conservatives believe the choice is an important one.

"This is the first test of his candidacy," one said. "Will he be deaf to the cries of the Conservative base, in order to choose someone deemed to be a "safer" choice? If he does this, it will not bode well for his election chances. Are you listening, Mr Romney?"

"This could be the most important decision of the campaign if he does not get it right," said another.

"This could make or break his chances," said a third.

When conservatives were asked to share the most-important attribute of the VP nominee, responses were diverse. But several themes did emerge.

About 18 percent said the most-important attribute is the person's ability to take over the role as President — either in case of emergency, following Romney or in future elections.

Nearly 20 percent of those who answered the open-ended question mentioned the "Republican base" or "conservative" in their response.

But the single-biggest theme that emerged, which was mentioned by 22 percent of those who answered the question, was that the vice presidential choice should have "voter appeal," be "vote getting" or rate high in "likability."

The Red Palmetto Survey

Our surveys are not a scientific random sample of any larger population but rather an effort to listen to a swath of influential local Republican activists, party leaders and elected officials in South Carolina. All of these individuals have agreed to participate in the surveys, although not all responded to this week's questions. Surveys were conducted between July 16 and June 19, 2012.

Patch will be conducting Red Palmetto and Blue Palmetto surveys throughout 2012 in hopes of determining the true sentiment of conservatives and liberals on the ground in South Carolina. If you are an activist, party leader or elected official and would like to take part in a weekly surveys that lasts just a few minutes, please email Regional Editor Chris Winston at chris.winston@patch.com.

Maybe it would do the group good to understand what the requirements (Constitution) are to be VP and/or Pres.

I would assume that Mitt Romney will pick the individual he feels most comfortable with. The president and VP shouldn't be a popularity contest, like the last election.

Sorry, Samantha, I find myself wondering why you feel you are "entitled" to demand of aRead More private agency that they perform according to your expectations. Parents are responsible for feeding their children, not an agency, not the state, just responsible parents. Now it is a nice thing that private groups, churches, and certain charities sometimes help out. But entitlement just because you demand it ? Get off my planet !

I am so sorry for your loss. I had the pleasure of attending high school with Rick. I personallyRead More lost my husband at a young 46 years old over a year ago. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers. We never understand why God seems to take all the good men first, but maybe one day we will personally see why. May family and friends give you strength and may you always cherish those sweet memories you had with each other. My deepest condolscences. Sheri Baughman Howle

All ot that just to promote a belief in a mythical god, what a waste of time and energy. If all ofRead More the time that is spent praying to imaginary beings was actually put to a productive , beneficial use the world would be a lot better place for everyone.

Terrorists seem to strike in very big cities and/or at big events. I don't think anyone can feelRead More 100% safe in large gatherings, marathons, parades, sporting events, etc. anymore. There is no complete defense against terrorism-- finding out who planted the bombs in Boston will help us in preventing the next assault. Drive-by shootings and dealths by guns/handguns happen hundreds of times a week in the US anyway, but no one seems very concerned about this for some reason.
Jessica Davis April 17, 2013 at 10:25 pm
@ Janie... I partially agree with you... None can feel 100% safe anymore and that's sad but you haveRead More to live each day to the first and not let the terrors of the world stop you from sending functions... Than they win. But you're wrong about no one caring about the every day violence of handguns. For almost a year now the government has been having a debate about gun laws and gun safety... Though I may not agree with everything that's been said... We are in the process of turning this country around.... Get put there and vote- help make the difference

I agree with Jessica! I so hate what we have become . Our children can't play in their own yardRead More without constant supervision . We have to be more watchful of our surroundings. Everyone is too busy to lend a helping hand to anyone anymore . We all need to take a step back and have more love and respect for one another . If we stand together we can make a big difference .
