Speak Out: Who Should Win Battle Between Steve Spurrier, Columnist

The feud between The State's Ron Morris and South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier keeps growing louder.

While No. 6 South Carolina football fans prepare for a huge match-up Saturday with No. 5 Georgia, it's the action off the field that has plenty of people talking.

The feud between Gamecock head coach Steve Spurrier and Ron Morris, a columnist for The State in Columbia, has heated up again.

Last time, Spurrier refused to have a press conference with Morris in the room.

This time, the Head Ball Coach is saying someone has to go.

Listen to both men tell their versions of the story in the video attached to the story.

What do you think: Who's in the right? Should Spurrier be able to run Morris out of town? Should he just focus on the field?

Morris needs to go, and fight his fight somewhere else. Maybe up north, we don't need him, and his vile comments in the State paper, and if the States keeps him, I will keep my money, and do without their paper. Just Saying !

Of course I am more than slightly biased, as a journalist, but I can tell you one thing: The idea that Spurrier didn't know he'd be under intense media scrutiny at USC is farcical. And it would be even worse at UNC, where they is more media. And just because you put some Ws on the board doesn't change that.

Morris was voted best sports writer in the state of South Carolina. He does not work for the Gamecocks Club or USC. Spurrier has always been a but*hole since he played at Florida. He wants everbody to kiss his behind. Yes, he is a good football coach. But he should learn he's not God. Morris wil be around along time. When Spurrier starts losing he wil be gone.

Spurrier needs to act like a grown man how old is he 70 or 7?
Shawn Drury (Editor) October 1, 2012 at 05:25 pm
While Morris is hardly qualified to criticize a coach with 30+ years of experience coaching football at a very high level (imagine Spurrier criticizing Morris' writing), Spurrier isn't setting a very good example for the young people he is supposed to be leading. Threatening to effectively "take his ball and go home" isn't really something we ought to be teaching our young people.

I really don't care one way or the other but I do hold a journalist to a slightly higher level since it's their job to state the facts. In order to state the facts, they would need to be verified. But when a so-called journalist goes on a national radio show and somehow compares anyone's program to that of the debacle at Penn State without knowing any facts is just ludicrous. Whether it's a personal opinion or not it should not have been stated!! And start proof reading yourself Chris (where they is more media)...lol

Thanks Jim... I will read more carefully next time before I hit the submit...

And two quick points:
Morris is a columnist who is paid to express his opinions, whether they include facts or not. Readers don't often distinguish the difference, but there is one. That's why his face is plastered on his pieces. And comparing USC to Penn State was a mistake that he apologized for.

I haven't read any of Ron's columns for years now because he only writes articles giving his opinion that tend to stir up the community. I remember his kind from living in Summerville for forty years and hearing all of the opinions from the stands calling John McKissick an idiot (LOL).He is in the same mold as the ex-drunk, Ken Burger, from the Charleston Newsless Courier. If Ron is such a talented writer he could easily adapt to writing about high school and community tennis or either the Living Well section of the newspaper.

i would have to go against the reporter knowing how bias most, not all of them really are. The fact is :Spurrier has no reason to spit mistruths about or to anyone. However morrison is smart and knows or think anything off of his finger tips is protected. truth or mistruth.I stopped reading the state a long time ago because of the practice to print their opinion as fact and not JUST ANOTHER OPION.. I think ANYONE that prints a mistruth should be held liable for their actions..In short , good by Morrison and glad to see Spurrier on saturday..Dont take the media crap..GOOD JOB COACH !!!!!

I truly believe that comparing The University of SC and Suppier to Penn State and Paterno is a fireable offense. Not only was it slanderous, it completely diminished the sodemy of young men by a sexual pervert. In my opinion, humble as it may be, Ron Morris has effectively "raped the victims of Penn State" with biased and unprofessional jounalism. An apology given in the manner he gave it does not alleivate this.

Spurrier been doing this job how many years. One would think that he would have a little thicker skin by now. USC needs to be careful that they don't fall into the same trap that Penn State did, in other words don't let the Football coach dictate College policy, just remember that Spurrier is just a football coach.......not God.
Gary Lee White October 1, 2012 at 07:38 pm
Remember !..... USC's main priority is to educate young men and women so they can have a better tomorrow, and help our country to grow.....not to just play football.

I would say it is just a Spurrier problem, even though I am a huge fan of him and the Gamecocks, but he has not only done this type of stuff to just Spurrier. He has pulled this with all the major coaches. It stops becoming opinion and reporting when a personal vendetta is set up. I don't think he should lose his job at the state, but maybe not be allowed to cover USC anymore. Maybe it is just time to hire another person to cover them. It also seems every time a kid gets hurt and plays a little while later that he tries to say that the coach is intentionally playing a hurt kid against his will. Especially during this time and age players getting hurt, it is too big of a deal for a coach to just cover up. I am sure there are many layers you have to go through to get a hurt kid approved to play, and I don't mean just a coach and medical staff, I am sure some other thing is in place.

The minute you let someone know they can push your button anytime they want to, that guy owns you. BUT Anyway,,,,,,,,,

Morris has always slanted his articles, in any way he can possibly dream up, to disparage Spurrier and the Gamecock football team. His intent is to damage the football program or at least taint it's success . He's extremely prejudiced towards the community he's supposed to serve, Gamecock fans. He has no business being here, let alone allowed to spread his mental illness thru the news service. The State newspaper's management is what drives this. Fire the entire paper, not just Ron Morris.

Sorry, Samantha, I find myself wondering why you feel you are "entitled" to demand of aRead More private agency that they perform according to your expectations. Parents are responsible for feeding their children, not an agency, not the state, just responsible parents. Now it is a nice thing that private groups, churches, and certain charities sometimes help out. But entitlement just because you demand it ? Get off my planet !

I am so sorry for your loss. I had the pleasure of attending high school with Rick. I personallyRead More lost my husband at a young 46 years old over a year ago. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers. We never understand why God seems to take all the good men first, but maybe one day we will personally see why. May family and friends give you strength and may you always cherish those sweet memories you had with each other. My deepest condolscences. Sheri Baughman Howle

All ot that just to promote a belief in a mythical god, what a waste of time and energy. If all ofRead More the time that is spent praying to imaginary beings was actually put to a productive , beneficial use the world would be a lot better place for everyone.

Terrorists seem to strike in very big cities and/or at big events. I don't think anyone can feelRead More 100% safe in large gatherings, marathons, parades, sporting events, etc. anymore. There is no complete defense against terrorism-- finding out who planted the bombs in Boston will help us in preventing the next assault. Drive-by shootings and dealths by guns/handguns happen hundreds of times a week in the US anyway, but no one seems very concerned about this for some reason.
Jessica Davis April 17, 2013 at 10:25 pm
@ Janie... I partially agree with you... None can feel 100% safe anymore and that's sad but you haveRead More to live each day to the first and not let the terrors of the world stop you from sending functions... Than they win. But you're wrong about no one caring about the every day violence of handguns. For almost a year now the government has been having a debate about gun laws and gun safety... Though I may not agree with everything that's been said... We are in the process of turning this country around.... Get put there and vote- help make the difference
Debbie DuBois Chastain Spires April 18, 2013 at 06:38 pm
I agree with Jessica! I so hate what we have become . Our children can't play in their own yardRead More without constant supervision . We have to be more watchful of our surroundings. Everyone is too busy to lend a helping hand to anyone anymore . We all need to take a step back and have more love and respect for one another . If we stand together we can make a big difference .
