The Lexington County Arts Association's "The Sleeping Beauty" runs through Sunday at Village Square Theatre in Lexington.

The play, written and directed by Debra Leopard, is a Junior Arts Summer Workshop production. Performers ages 5 to 17 will take the stage and bring the production to life.

“The Sleeping Beauty” is based on the story by the Brothers Grimm. A beautiful and much beloved princess, Briar Rose, is cursed at birth by an evil fairy, who says she will prick her finger on a spindle on her 16th birthday and die.

Fortunately, one of the good fairies of the kingdom changes the curse to a sleeping spell. Despite the best efforts of her father to have every spinning wheel in the kingdom destroyed, the evil fairy triumphs and Briar Rose falls into a 100 year sleep along with her entire kingdom. She will only awaken with a “true love’s kiss.”

This adaptation has comedy, romance, drama and many familiar characters. There are also some fun new twists to the classic tale.

Shows are 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets are $6, and may be purchased online at www.villagesquaretheatre.com.
