LCSD Donates More Food, Toys

Sheriff's annual holiday challenge nets more than a ton of food and hundreds of toys for those in need this Christmas

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies turned over 2,276 pounds of non-perishable food items and 210 new, unwrapped toys on Dec. 9 during a Stuff-A-Bus public-awareness event held at the near Irmo. 

Lexington County Sheriff James Metts said neighborhood watch groups in the North Region Patrol District, which is based near Irmo, collected and donated the food and toys as part of the Spirit of Giving Challenge that the Sheriff’s Department annually conducts for its holiday food and toy drive.

During the Spirit of Giving Challenge, Quail Valley Neighborhood Watch donated the largest amount of food and toys for a large subdivision, with 1,241 pounds of food and 97 toys donated for the drive, Metts said. 

Stratton Court Neighborhood Watch donated the largest amount of food and toys for a small subdivision, with 313 pounds of food and 16 toys donated. 

Hallmark Neighborhood Watch and Planter’s Station Neighborhood Watch also donated food and toys for the holiday food and toy drive.

The Sheriff’s Department began conducting the Spirit of Giving Challenge in 2008, Metts said. Since then, 5,438 pounds of food and 530 toys have been donated during the annual event.

Harvest Hope Food Bank will distribute the collected food , Metts said. The Salvation Army will distribute the toys.

The Sheriff’s Department holiday food and toy drive is not yet completed, and deputies still are accepting donations of new, unwrapped toys and non-perishable food items, Metts said.
