Book of the Week: The Reading Promise

Lexington librarian Mark Mancuso shares his first recommendation.

The Reading Promise: My Father and the Books We Shared by Alice Ozma is a memoir about the relationship between a girl and her single-parent father and the bond they created through literature.  Ozma's father read aloud to his daughter every night, without fail, from when she was nine until she left for college nine years later.

"Her father was a school librarian," Lexington librarian Mark Macuso said, "and her mother left when she was nine.  From that time until she was 18, she and her father had a pact that he would read aloud to her every day.

"They go through this incredible list of books in nine years," Mancuso said.  "It's partly about discovering the library, about being a single parent and about their relationship."
