What Should Go Here?
Shireys on Main sits vacant in the struggling heart of Lexington's downtown.
Once the site of a furniture store that began in the 1970s, the site of Shireys-on-Main continues to sit vacant in Lexington's downtown.
What do you think should go in this empty building on East Main Street? Tell us in the comments section below.

Nothing will work as there is no parking! Re route traffic and make main street a pedestrian area like Boulder Co or similar cities. This way restaurants and bars can have outside dining and it is more consumer friendly

A nice bakery would be good or something like "Cheesecake Factory", "Atlanta Bead Co.", or something like it.

Be nice to sees some sort of mixed use. On the bottom, retail or restaurant or bar to draw people downtown. Depending on the load bearing capability of ghe roof, a rooftop restaurtant or night spot would be nice. Or just make it a green roof with a garden on top. The top floor could be apartments, based on what the bottom floor becomes..

Please pardon my long response - I am just So Happy to see this! I've been hoping - for years - that something really special and neat would move into this space! My Great-Grandad, John Simon Caughman, Sr. built this store years ago with a Mr. Kaminer. They owned and ran a general mercantile and I believe there may have been a millinery upstairs at one time. (My Aunts enjoyed being able to wear beautiful new Easter Bonnets and hats for Sunday Church! :) There is still a plaque up on the top-front of the building with their names and the year it was built, I believe.
For years I've enjoyed thinking of things that would be neat to see in that space. Definitely a nice, warm, welcoming atmosphere that you would make you want to stay a while and enjoy! I've always thought that the interior of these old shops was really cool. Cho on Main has a really nice design, as do some of the shops in the Old Mill. Maybe a nice restaurant and pub or coffee house that could feature live music. I LOVE the idea of a roof-top area! It would be LOTS of fun to sit up-top on Main Street and have a nice over-view of town! There really aren't many places around town that offer any kind of out-side area at all. There are so few old buildings left along our little stretch of Main Street and I am so happy to see attention being given and effort being made to preserve what is still there and to reviving the downtown area! :)
