USC's Matthews Named Columbia Regional MVP

The Lexington native helped lead the Gamecocks baseball team to wins against Clemson in Saturday and Sunday's regional games.

South Carolina outfielder and Lexington native Adam Matthews was named Columbia Regional MVP.

In three games, the senior, who graduated from White Knoll High School, hit .385 with a home run, a double and six RBIs, according to a report on GoUpstate.com.

Matthews, who missed out on most of the postseason last year because of a hamstring injury, said it felt great to be back.

“Past couple years, it's been frustrating not being able to be a part. Last year, I was hurt. This year, it's an honor to play in front of our fans at home and be able to contribute in a big way,” Matthews told a Spartanburg Herald-Journal reporter. “It was a lot of fun. It's an honor.”

Matthews led the Gamecocks to wins against Manhattan on Friday and Clemson in Saturday and Sunday's regional games.
