Town Plans Dog Park on Hendrix Street
Town leaders are now planning an 8.9-acre dog park on Hendrix Street instead of using a 2-acre piece of an existing park for the project.
Lexington's plan for a dog park is growing.
The town plans to lease 8.9 acres of land on Hendrix Street from the county for fenced-in areas for dogs to run around unleashed.
Town leaders originally planned to used a 2-acre section of Virginia Hylton Park for the project, said Lexington Mayor Randy Halfacre, but opening the dog park on the Hendrix Street property will be cheaper and give the town more space for the park.
The dog park could include one fenced-in area for small dogs and one for big dogs, Halfacre said. The park could also have dog showers and dog water fountains.
But the park won't just be for the dogs, Halfacre said.
"It's not only a dog park. It's a people park," he said. "It's really bigger than bringing your dogs out and letting them run. It really becomes a community meeting place."
Lexington County Council approved the first reading of an ordinance leasing the land to the town for $1 at its meeting Tuesday. Council has two more readings of the ordinance before it's officially passed.
The land is located between Barr Road and Duffie Drive on Hendrix Street near the Lexington Soccer Complex.
"There's not much else we can do with (the land)," county councilman Johnny Jeffcoat said at Tuesday's meeting. "The town will make good use of a property we can't use."
The town already set aside $25,000 in its budget to start building the park, Halfacre said. The project will cost about $50,000 total.
Town staff members have researched dog parks and are developing a plan of action, Halfacre said, but they aren't sure when work will start on the park.
Town leaders decided to open a dog park as a service to Lexington residents, Halfacre said. The park will give dog owners constrained by small yards and the town's leash ordinance a space to bring their four-legged friends.
"We want to have a state of the art dog park," Halfacre said. "When it's complete, we're going to have a tremendous asset for this community."

Why not make the land into a skate and basketball park for the kids. And use the land behind the lexington library for the dog park. That's where all the apartments are and alot of the tenants have dogs with no place to walk them except for on commerical property. Put benches and supply water and it will be a great place for people to sit, eat their lunch, socialize and read the books they checked out from the library. There is a whole elderly community right behind the library and that would give them a safe place to walk and chat.

Hi Laura! Thanks for your comment. Behind the library wouldn't be a bad spot for the dog park either. But the lease between the county and the town requires that the town use the land on Hendrix Street as a pet park. So once county council makes the final approval, I think the dog park has to go on Hendrix Street.

We need a dog park. I'm from Charleston and James Island County park has an amazing Dog park. I love the idea of having a place for our Golden Retriever to run and play with other dogs. A luxury he doesn't get since when he's socializing with other dogs he has to be on his leash. I'm all for it. I hope it opens and gets underway soon.

Hi Janet,
I've had several people e-mail me and ask for updates. Seems like something people in Lexington really want!
Mayor Halfacre gave his State of the Town Address at the beginning of this year, and he listed the dog park as one of the things the town will be working on this year. There's an advisory committee set up that's working on site design and rules and regulations for the park. But they don't expect it to open until 2014.
Here's the story about the State of the Town Address if you're interested: http://lexington-sc.patch.com/articles/mayor-improving-traffic-in-lexington-front-and-center-in-2013

Hi Janet,
The dog park...Mocha (our chocolate lab) and I will be first in line on opening day! Mocha grew up at the Isle of Palms Bark Park. I enjoyed taking her everyday, it was "social hour" for dog owners and their pets.Dog parks allow our furry friends meet on neutral ground, run without a leash and teaches social skills with no boundaries.
Thanks, Laura C.

It would be nice to include a playground for kids. Nothing big but parents often bring thier kids to the dog parks and it would be nice for the kids to have a place outside of the fenced area to play. The dog park in FL had one and my daughter and i loved to play. my husdand and the dog got to run around in the fence. It was great.
