Open-Heart Surgery Coming to LMC

Hospital assembling its team for program that starts later this month.

Lexington County residents who require open-heart surgery have had to go elsewhere. But that will end March 26 when Lexington Medical Center begins a new program that will offer the procedure for the first time.

“Our goal is to assemble a team,” Dr. Jeffrey Allen Travis told about 160 Chamber members at Tuesday’s breakfast meeting. Travis is LMC’s first open-heart surgeon, having been chosen unanimously by the board last fall.

"…Travis noted that cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer everywhere, including Lexington County," the chamber report said. "Observing from outside the area during LMC’s 10-year legislative and legal fight to provide open-heart surgery, Travis said he was impressed by “how relentless” LMC was in its mission to serve its community and provide a full range of cardiothoracic services and surgery. He predicts 150 open-heart cases in the first year and 300 in the next two-three years."
