Haley to Senate: Finish Bill or Don't Leave

Gov. Haley says the Senate needs to finish the bill tonight

Gov. Nikki Haley flexed her political muscles Tuesday night when she called an impromptu press conference to insist that the Senate finish a bill that would create a new Department of Administration.

Haley said the Senate should remain in session "through the night" to finish work on the bill, according to the South Carolina Radio Network.

The Senate has been working on the bill for five weeks. The bill would transfer some responsiblities of the controversial Budget and Control Board to the Department of Administration, which would become part of the executive branch.

After the press conference, multiple Senators criticized Haley on the Senate floor.

"Our governor just had a news conference saying the Senate was going to stay in session until this bill passed," one senator said on the Senate online stream. "That doesn't sound like separation of powers to me."

Another senator, from Richland County, requested that the Senate recess from 5:30 p.m. Tuesday until 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Update (4:49 p.m.): Senate Passes Amendement to Bill, Adjourns

The South Carolina Senate passed an amendment to a bill that would create a new Department of Administration and adjourned despite pleas from Gov. Haley.

The amendment, put forth by Sens. Sheehan, Davis and Massey, passed 36 to 2 in the Senate.

"My amendment to H. 3066 — to abolish the Budget and Control Board — just passed 36 to 2 in SC Senate," Sen. Davis said on his Facebook page. "Empire will strike back tomorrow, though. We need to hang tough."

Although a bill was not passed by the Senate Tuesday, Haley said she was happy the amendment passed.

“I want to thank the 36 senators who listened to the will of the people and voted in favor of this amendment," Haley said. "Tomorrow’s task is to keep the ball moving forward – this is just one of many issues we need to address this session.”

I thought the SC form of government was a strong legislature and a weak governor. It's W-A-Y past time that the legislature flex its muscles and put Gov. Horseface in her place!!!!

"Flexed her political muscles?????" What the hell was Reilly Moore (whoever Reilly Moore is) thinking when he wrote that? This governor doesn't have any political muscle---not with the people and certainly not in the legislative chambers of the State House. Her press conference and the absurd demand per the Senate? Nothing but showboating for the press. Nothing but an attempt to create the perception that she has power that, in reality, she doesn't have. "Political muscles?" Find a more accurate phrase, Reilly. Something like, "South Carolina's embarassing excuse for a governor engaged in wishful thinking Tuesday night when..."

I see our idiot governor is making yet another power grab, apparently she is clueless about government works. This is what we get when we elect control freaks like this.

Nikki likes to provide South Carolina with lousy education, low wages
no collective bargaining , low pensions, poor healthcare, no unions.
I am waiting for her to propose plantations for the unemployed as a job's bill.

Well, she is adding jobs by increasing state employees for a totally new bureaucracy! Smaller government? I don't think so.

And we didn't vote for Sheheen because......????????? Seriously.....ya'll need to analyze that! Same reason that the McCain people advocated for Sara Palin - to appeal to evangelicals or something. Come on people!
